Oranges were not in reach of the middle class until the 1850s. The abundant groves in Florida were not planted until after the Civil War, and prior to World War I only the rich could afford them! Despite what many people think fresh oranges were not advertised at Christmas time and not used for ornaments like pomanders as often as once thought.
