The creation of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer 

Robert L. May, an employee at Montgomery Ward, wrote a poem called “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” in 1939. The store printed the poem and distributed it to children as a sales gimmick. Written to appeal children, almost two and one-half million copies ended up being made and then was copyrighted and the poem was made into a book. In 1949 a friend of May’s named Johnny Marks composed a song based on the story , first year on the market fans bought two million copies of the song.
