A pomander was a Christmas tradition in most pioneer’s homes during the holidays. It’s an apple or orange with cloves stuck all around it, letting off a wonderful and comforting aroma. Here’s how to make one:

You’ll need: Newspapers, box of whole cloves, an apple or orange, 2 tsp of ground cinnamon, 2 tsp of ground ginger, a paper bag and 2 pieces of yarn or ribbon (60 cm).

Step 1: Lay out newspapers on table and stick the stem of the cloves into the fruit of choice until it is completely covered.

Step 2: Put the cinnamon and ginger in the paper bag and shake it so it gets mixed. Then put the clove covered fruit in the bag and skate it until it’s covered with spices.

Step 3: Knot one piece of ribbon around the apple, then a second so that they are at right angles when they meet.

Step 4: Tie two ends to finish in a loop, tie the other two ends into a bow and hang to dry and harden.
